Registration is underway for the Allen D. Leman Swine Conference, an annual educational event for the global swine industry. This year's conference, slated for Sept. 16-19 at the St. Paul Rivercentre in St. Paul, Minnesota, will feature sessions covering everything from new developments in African swine fever diagnostics and the value of manure for sustainable agriculture to grow-finish biosecurity and what's next for Proposition 12.

The conference is internationally acclaimed for bringing science-driven solutions to the complex challenges facing the industry. Each year hundreds of participants from over 20 countries, including swine veterinarians and other professionals working in swine production and animal health management, attend the Leman Swine Conference.

Keynote topics and speakers for the event:

  • Opportunities in the Export Market: Randy Spronk, Spronk Brothers III LLP

  • Sustainable Veterinary Medicine – Tackling the challenges of a dynamic industry: Chris Richards, Apiam Animal Health

  • Improving biosecurity through Bob Morrison's legacy - Morrison Lectureship: Jean Pierre Vaillancourt, University of Montreal

  • Chasing a moving target: Rapid evolution and spread of PRRSV in the U.S. - Pijoan Lectureship: Kim VanderWaal, University of Minnesota

Breakout session topics include swine mycoplasmas, secure food systems, gene editing, shared ecosystems of feral and domestic pigs, productivity in difficult times and discerning emerging diseases.

Award presentations include:

  • Presentation of the Morrison Swine Innovator Prize, which honors the legacy of UMN professor Bob Morrison and encourages DVM students to pursue work that matters to the swine industry and follow his mantra of "Learn. Teach. Have fun."

  • Recognition of Dr. John Deen's contributions to the swine industry and the University of Minnesota

  • Presentation of the Allen D. Leman Science in Practice Award to Dr. Tom Petznick, for his science-based and practical approaches to livestock health.

In 1974, Allen D. Leman, a new University of Minnesota Extension veterinarian, and Jim Hanson, director of the college of veterinary medicine's continuing education program, initiated the conference to present new information and discuss issues important to the swine industry. Leman understood how a university could influence practitioners and empower them to be leaders for the swine industry.
