When the news of COVID-19 broke in March, many questions were left unanswered both for the pork industry and consumers throughout Ohio and the United States. Not only were grocery store shelves empty, but many families found themselves in a difficult situation with unemployment rates soaring to record high numbers.

With a business centered around caring, both for their livestock and their local community, Heimerl Farms Ltd., saw a need to help those who may be struggling to put food on their tables.

"Forty-one million Americans go hungry every day and of that, 11 million are children,” says Brad Heimerl, family member and part-owner of Heimerl Farms. "Add this to the economic climate that COVID-19 has created and you instantly see where there is a need to bring food to the tables of families throughout central Ohio."

Heimerl Farms, with the partnership of Provimi, a Cargill company, donated 1,645 pounds of processed pork to Mid-Ohio Foodbank, who provides 140,000 meals per day to families in need across 20 counties in Ohio.

"We are so incredibly grateful to have partners in our community like Heimerl Farms," says Matt Habash, president and CEO of Mid-Ohio Food Collective. "Your generosity will allow us to continue meeting the needs of our customers when they need us the most. With meat being one of the most sought-after products for our customers, your donation of pork will go a long way in putting a nutritious meal on the tables of our customers."

Heimerl Farms believes this is just one way they can continue to support not only their local community, but those who are in most need of healthy nutritional options for their families.

"We hope that this donation of 1,645 one-pound packages of ground pork lets consumers know that as pig farmers we care and want to help provide a protein-packed meal for those in need," says Heimerl.

Heimerl Farms is a family-run farming operation located 20 minutes northeast of Columbus in Johnstown, Ohio. Though widely known for their swine operations, Heimerl Farms also raise Holstein cattle and several thousand acres of row crops.
