Saputo Inc. announced Aug. 15 its support for a dairy goat welfare research project at Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

Saputo will contribute $100,000 over the next two years to the development of benchmarking and training materials in dairy goat care and handling as well as producer outreach workshops.

The funding for this research project, led by veterinary medicine specialist Dr. Paul J. Plummer, is part of the company’s efforts to collaborate with industry stakeholders to improve dairy goat welfare standards, Saputo said.

As a global dairy processor, Saputo said it will continue to demonstrate leadership in this regard. High-quality dairy products begin with high-quality milk from healthy and well-cared-for animals. Accordingly, Saputo is committed to supporting initiatives and programs that promote communication, awareness and training opportunities for dairy production welfare issues.

Saputo produces, markets and distributes a wide array of dairy products, including cheese, fluid milk, extended-shelf-life milk and cream products, cultured products and dairy ingredients. Saputo is one of the top 10 dairy processors in the world, the largest cheese manufacturer and the leading fluid milk and cream processor in Canada, the top dairy processor in Australia and the second largest in Argentina. In the U.S., Saputo ranks among the top three cheese producers and is one of the largest producers of extended-shelf-life and cultured dairy products.
