Report details Herbruck’s care for people, animals and environment through innovative practices.

Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch released its 2020 Sustainability Report last week, outlining the company’s values and how it sustainably serves hundreds of thousands of people across the U.S. with eggs.

“Our values for sustainability drive Herbruck’s forward, serving as a roadmap that guides our business decisions to ensure we treat our birds, our employees, the environment and the communities we call home with respect,” said Greg Herbruck, president of Herbruck’s.

The report details how Herbruck’s puts its values into action through four key pillars: People, Planet, Products and Prosperity.

As a fourth-generation family business, Herbruck’s has a long-standing history demonstrating its commitment to its employees and the community. Herbruck’s serves its employees through its on-site wellness clinic and by providing premium-free health care, as well as offering flexible time off and comprehensive job safety training and opportunities for growth.

In the communities it serves, Herbruck’s is proud to partner with many local organizations and encourage employees to do the same, as well as donating more than 1 million eggs annually. Herbruck’s also hosts employee blood drives in partnership with the American Red Cross, donated personal protective equipment to local first responders during COVID-19 and sponsors local community groups.

Herbruck’s also makes the planet one of its top priorities through multiple initiatives, including using recyclable packaging and creating a natural fertilizer product using hen litter. Herbruck’s is also involved in multiple programs to protect the air and groundwater from emissions and pollution. Herbruck’s has a 98% diversion rate as a result of creatively reducing waste and byproducts and recycled more than 30 million pounds of material in 2020.

Serving the bird is the bedrock of Herbruck’s values, which is why it has earned a sterling reputation for animal care. Herbruck’s is an industry leader in cage-free housing, with 75% of its operations cage-free, and plans to be 100% cage-free by 2024.

Herbruck’s also has extensive biosecurity protocols to protect its flocks from viruses, bacteria, parasites and more.

“Our flocks are nurtured with the best care, handling, nutrition and environmental conditions because it is the right thing to do,” Herbruck said. “We work hard to maintain our reputation for top-quality animal care and as a result our policies have both preceded and exceeded industry and federal guidelines.”

Herbruck’s continues to invest in its future by expanding facilities, markets, and marketing efforts, with the goal of providing nutritious products customers will enjoy. This month, Herbruck’s began site preparation on its new sustainable cage-free egg-laying facility in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. Herbruck’s continues its short and long-term investments with sustainable efforts that maximize energy efficiency.

“Now more than ever, people are demanding ethically sourced, higher quality eggs, and through our core values we are poised to meet and exceed that demand,” Herbruck said. “We care deeply about the people, animals and environment around us, and look forward to improving upon these robust practices for generations to come.”

Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch is a fourth-generation family farm based in Saranac, Michigan. Herbruck’s is the largest egg producer in Michigan and has locations in Michigan, Indiana and Pennsylvania.
