Following local reports of African swine fever (ASF) in Assam, India, the national government has informed the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) of 11 outbreaks of the virus in northeastern India.

Dr. Atul Chaturvedi with India's Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying sent the report to OIE May 21, which listed the date of the initial outbreak as Jan. 26, 2020, with confirmation on May 18.

This is India's first outbreak of ASF, with the initial cases found in separate villages in Arunachal Pradesh before moving into Assam in February and March. Overall, India has reported to OIE 11 ASF outbreaks leading to 4,199 cases and 10,920 susceptible swine.

India reported that culling of all susceptible pigs in a 1 km radius from the outbreak epicenter is in progress, and other control measures include movement controls inside the country, surveillance outside and within containment and protection zones, disposal of carcasses and destruction of animal products.
