U.S. hog inventory on the rise
USDA quarterly report shows hog producers continue the push to increase hog production
For the first time since March 2013, the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service reported a year-over-year increase in hog inventory.
On Dec. 1, 2015, the U.S. inventory of all hogs and pigs penciled at 66.05 million head, up 2% from a year ago. The breeding inventory stands at 5.969 million head, increasing 4% from December 2013. Similar, the market inventory at 60.082 million head climbed 2% from last year.
The September-November 2014 pig crop was also higher at 29.4 million head with sow farrowings totaling 2.87 million head, up 3% from 2013. The average pigs saved per litter reached an all-time high -10.23 – for the September-November time period.
Farrowing intentions for December-May 2015 is also up. U.S. hog producers intend to have 2.87 million sows farrow during December through February 2015 and 2.90 million sows farrow for March-May 2015.
