Agenda for VFD seminar at IPPE announced

THE American Feed Industry Assn. (AFIA) will host a Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) seminar on Jan. 26, 2016, as part of the International Production & Processing Expo (IPPE) in Atlanta, Ga.

The two-hour session will cover changes made to the Food & Drug Administration's VFD rule in 2014 and will describe the challenges industry can expect moving forward.

The seminar is ideal for feed industry personnel responsible for handling VFDs and those interested in learning what to do with old animal drug premixes after the policy goes into effect in January 2017.

The agenda for the seminar is as follows:

* 2-3 p.m. — VFD: What you need to know before January 2017, presented by Richard Sellers, AFIA senior vice president of legislative and regulatory affairs.

* 3:00-3:45 p.m. — panel discussion (moderated by Sellers) with Dr. Dave Pyburn, National Pork Board vice president of science and technology; Kelly Marie Klaus, Animal Health Institute manager of regulatory affairs, and Dr. Tom Frost, Wayne Farms LLC director of nutrition and research.

* 3:45-4:00 p.m. — questions and answers, led by Sellers.

"Changes to the Veterinary Feed Directive and animal drugs used in human medicine have been very complicated for many in the feed industry," Sellers noted. "AFIA is striving to make this transition as smooth as possible by providing assistance for our members and the industry to stay one step ahead of FDA's proposed changes."

IPPE is expected to attract more than 28,000 attendees and is a collaboration of three trade shows — the International Feed Expo, the International Poultry Expo and the International Meat Expo — representing the entire chain of protein production and processing. The event is sponsored by AFIA, the U.S. Poultry & Egg Assn. and the North American Meat Institute.
