JOHNSONVILLE Sausage LLC has announced that it will work with its pork suppliers to transition pork production from systems that use gestation stalls to "alternative pregnant sow housing" by 2025.
The company is the largest sausage maker in the U.S.
Johnsonville, in a statement on its website, noted that it does not raise sows but believes in ethical animal handling and treatment practices. It said it, therefore, will move to using suppliers that can provide housing that affords greater comfort and movement for animals and ensures the safety of workers.
Johnsonville was founded in 1945 and has headquarters in Sheboygan Falls, Wis.
