GAO: Fragmentation still exists in food safety oversight

National strategy suggested to address fragmentation of federal oversight of food safety efforts.

Although the U.S. food supply is generally considered safe, foodborne illness remains a common, costly yet largely preventable public health problem. Food safety and quality involves 16 federal agencies. For more than four decades, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) has reported on the fragmented federal food safety oversight system and continues to advocate for changes to the system. In an updated report, GAO called for a national strategy to address fragmentation in the federal food
