LIVESTOCK MARKETS: Fourth-quarter marketings to pressure cattle prices

Technicals suggest weaker future cattle prices.

Choice cutout prices still remain below 2014 and 2015 levels, even though they are currently higher than last year’s cutout prices. For the week ending Oct. 13, wholesale Choice beef prices averaged $198.22/cwt., approximately 8% above 2016 levels. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s latest “Livestock, Dairy & Poultry Outlook” said this level reflects more beef production and competition from abundant supplies of pork and poultry.
