March 23, 2015
Four buildings burned to the ground and two others were heavily damaged at large hog facility on the Nebraska-Kansas state line, reported local media.
At least 20 fire departments from both states responded to the blaze at the hog site owned by Livingston Enterprises Inc. Approximately 8,000 hogs were housed at the facility located 4 miles southeast of Reynolds, Neb.
Although employees were working at the facility when the fire broke out, no human injuries were reported but some hogs were killed in the fire.
Kenny Krause, Fairbury Rural Fire Dept. Chief told the local media that crews worked to save as many hogs as possible.
The gusting wind caused problems for firefighters in controlling the blaze. At 11:30 p.m. firefighters remained on the scene to working to keep hot spots under control.
The cause of fire is being investigated by the Nebraska State Fire Marshall’s Office.
