Red meat supplies higher at end of January
Frozen poultry supplies 2% lower than year-ago levels.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture last week released the delayed “Cold Storage” report for the month ending Jan. 31, 2019. Beef, pork, turkey and chicken supplies in storage totaled 2.3 billion lb., nearly unchanged from last year.
According to the report, red meat supplies in freezers totaled 1.1. billion lb., up 7% from the previous month but down 1% from last year. Total pounds of beef in freezers were 510.1 million lb., up 3% from the previous month and up 2% from last year. Frozen pork supplies totaled 562.7 million lb., up 11% from the previous month but down 3% from last year. Stocks of pork bellies were up 27% from last month and up 23% from last year.
Total frozen poultry supplies on Jan. 31, 2019, were 1.2 billion lb., up 4% from the previous month but down 2% from a year ago, USDA reported. Stocks of chicken totaled 842.2 million lb., down 4% from the previous month and down 4% from last year. Turkey in freezers totaled 389.2 million lb., up 29% from last month and up 4% from Jan. 31, 2018. Tom stocks, at 77.1 million lb., were lower than last year, while hen stocks were higher, at 87.9 million lb.
Total natural cheese stocks in refrigerated warehouses on Jan. 31, 2019, were up 1% from the previous month and up 6% from Jan. 31, 2018. Butter stocks were up 18% from last month but down 7% from a year ago.
