USDA makes $11.7m egg purchase

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced plans Aug. 24 to purchase shell eggs and egg products for surplus removal.

Chad Gregory, president and chief executive officer of the United Egg Producers (UEP), said, “At a time when egg farmers and processors are experiencing some of the lowest prices in years," UEP thanks USDA "for authorizing a bonus buy of eggs and egg products.”

Gregory added that the $11.7 million purchase by USDA will help hungry American families and other vulnerable populations by deploying a high-quality source of affordable protein where it is needed most.

“We are also pleased USDA will purchase both shell eggs and processed egg products. This balanced approach will be beneficial at a difficult time for the egg farming community,” Gregory noted.
