November egg production up 2%

EGG producers continued to ramp up production in light of strong retail prices and favorable feeding margins.

According to the monthly "Chickens & Eggs" report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. table egg production totaled 6.95 billion in November, up 1% from the same month last year.

Total production increased 2% to 7.97 billion eggs (Figure), including 1.03 billion hatching eggs. The total number of layers in November was up 1% from last year, and production per 100 layers was up slightly, at 2,282 eggs.

As with the broiler sector, egg producers are ramping up production, with the number of egg-type chickens hatched during November up 5% from year-ago levels and total eggs set up 9% from Dec. 1, 2012.
