Milk production in the 23 major states during June totaled 16.2 billion pounds, up 2.0% from June 2013, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s June Milk Production report released July 18.

May revised production at 16.9 billion pounds, was up 1.6% from May 2013. The May revision represented an increase of 25 million pounds or 0.1% from last month's preliminary production estimate, said USDA.

Production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 1,888 pounds for June. This is the highest production per cow for the month of June since the 23 state series began in 2003.

The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major states was 8.57 million head, 11,000 head more than May 2014, according to USDA.

Milk production in the United States during the April - June quarter totaled 52.8 billion pounds, up 1.6% from the April - June quarter last year.

USDA reported that the average number of milk cows in the U.S. during the quarter was 9.25 million head, 39,000 head more than the January – March quarter.
