Suderman, market analyst, Farm Futures, spoke as part of the Ames leg of the three-city Profit Robbers Road Show. This special event, designed to give farmers a last-minute look at key issues they'll face in 2010, was held at the Scheman Building at Iowa State University Center in Ames. Sponsored by Syngenta Crop Protection, the event was organized by Farm Progress.

During his presentation, Suderman explored currency issues, policy and farm bill talk that could impact your bottom line. He also took at look at weather patterns and trends.

Taking on Resistant Weeds

Weed Scientist Mike Owen walks farmers through key information on glyphosate issues ahead of 2010 season.

Keeping up with the latest tech on weed control isn't easy. New products and cultural advice comes out every year. Mike Owen, weed specialist, Iowa State University updated farmers on this hot topic during the 2010 Profit Robbers Road Show.

The road show, sponsored by Syngenta Crop Protection, was organized by Farm Progress and included speakers covering a range of topics ahead of the 2010 crop season. Owen provided growers an in-depth look at the tools available to their farm, and how best to put them to use for the current crop year.

Owen explored key factors involved with weed resistance issues, and the growing trend toward more weeds being resistant. However, he told growers that even if they don't see resistant weeds in their fields, they should be managing their crop as if those tough-to-control weed were already present.

Managing Corn and Soybean Diseases

Pathologist looks at key disease factors that inhibit yield, profit potential.

There are secret 'yield robbers' in your fields chewing away at plants, cutting into their high-yield potential and costing you money. That's the assertion of Wayne Pedersen, emeritus professor and plant pathologist, University of Illinois, during his talk titled "Integrated Management of Corn and Soybean Diseases - Yield Robbers".

Pedersen explored a range of issues impacting farm yields and strategies for combating problems. He notes the value of seed treatments, especially in his work on root development. That work has shown a strong correlation between plant root area and final yield.

Just how can a farmer hit the magic 300-bushel yield mark? That's a question that Fred Below has been working to answer in his work at the University of Illinois. As a plant physiologist, Below takes a look at a wide range of factors that can claw down yield potential in any season.

During his presentation, Below talked about the Seven Wonders of the Corn Yield World - exploring those factors that can have a positive, and sometimes negative, impact on yield. His work shows how different factors can impact what you harvest every fall.
