Compared to beef breeds, Holstein steers have relatively narrow genetic base, meaning more consistent feed intakes and average daily gains.

Dairy beef steers make up roughly 20% of the U.S. fed cattle market and, with their relatively low purchase price, they can be an attractive option for finishing when corn prices are favorable, James Gaspers, a beef nutritionist with Hubbard Feeds, explained in a recent "Hubbard Beef Solutions" newsletter.
