Demand for natural pigments increasing in poultry production

Natural pigment technology for egg and broiler skin coloring may be alternative due to tight synthetic supply.

A new natural carotenoid product may be the only option for some egg and poultry producers facing a tight supply of synthetic pigments.

According to Novus International Inc., demand is increasing for its COLORTEK Yellow feed additive -- a natural alternative to apo-ester for use in egg and broiler chicken skin coloring -- as the poultry industry adapts in the face of a shortage of synthetic pigments and decides to replace synthetic ingredients in poultry diets to suit consumer preferences.

"We developed this product to deliver consistent, uniform coloration to egg yolks and broiler skin while helping to reduce cost and maintain performance compared to synthetic sources," said Abishek Shingote, global product development manager of feed quality and pigments at Novus.

Novus's product is a natural source of yellow carotenoids produced with a new patented technology that utilizes xanthophylls, extracted from marigold flowers, to deliver desired pigmentation. This technology provides product stability and performance consistent to synthetic applications, with a high concentration of pigment (100 mg of xanthophylls per kilogram), Novus said.
