Steel tariffs could spell 31,500 ag-related job losses

Additional impact of tariffs could bring higher machinery costs while raising questions about the U.S.’s WTO compliance.

President Donald Trump signed March 8 proclamations imposing tariffs of 25% on U.S. imports of steel and 10% on U.S. imports of aluminum from all countries except, for now, Canada and Mexico. A new report details the net job impacts on agricultural industries could be significant, totaling more than 24,000 job losses in agriculture, another 6,009 in processed food and 1,514 in beverages and tobacco.
