Wildland fire activity continues to increase throughout the western states as well as in Alaska, Florida, Oklahoma and Texas, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. Currently, 60 large fires have burned 800,000-plus acres, contributing to the more than 2.8 million acres that have burned year to date.

Nearly 180,000 acres are currently burning in Colorado, but officials said Thursday a significant amount of containment was accomplished on the Spring Creek Fire, which, alone, has burned more than 105,000 acres and is the third-largest wildfire in the state's history.

Close to an inch of rain fell Thursday, allowing containment to jump from 5% to 35% overnight.

“We still have fire creeping on the ground, but we don’t have a lot of the tree torch activities,” fire center spokeswoman Lisa McNee told the Denver Post. “That was really good.”

More rain was in the forecast for Friday and Saturday. Still, the Rocky Mountain Area Coordination Center reported on Friday that moderate fire behavior with short crown runs, group torching and short-range spotting continue. The center said evacuations were in progress, and multiple residences were threatened. According to the Denver Post, the fire has destroyed at least 132 homes and damaged another 119 homes, and those figures are expected to grow.

In Alaska, 20 wildfires have burned nearly 217,000 acres, and wildfires in Oregon and California have burned more than 100,000 acres in each state.

Ed Delgado, national program manager for predictive services at the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Ida., recently provided a July through October outlook.
