France's Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA) and Phileo by Lesaffre have signed a partnership agreement in the field of nutrition and animal health.

The partnership will strengthen existing collaboration and optimize many projects around a shared goal: the inclusion of agricultural and food systems in a sustainable and economically viable development, the announcement said.

INRA and Phileo by Lesaffre initiated a research partnership 15 years ago that initially focused on demonstrating the beneficial effects of probiotics on the production performance of a number of species (ruminants, pigs and poultry). Over time, the collaboration has evolved toward more in-depth studies, including the use of increasingly sophisticated tools in the field of metagenomics, transcriptomics and metabolomics applied to immunology and microbiology, areas for which INRA has provided its expertise.

Some examples of the topics studied include:

  • The impact of probiotics on rumen physiology -- an innovative thermodynamic approach;

  • The benefits derived from yeast-based products in relation to colibacillosis-related inflammation in piglets;

  • The effects of beta-glucans on the immune system of ruminants;

  • The ability of dry yeasts to resist pelletization processes, and

  • The potential of yeast extracts to substitute for fish meal for carnivorous species in the aquaculture sector via a metabolomic approach.

In recent years, the fruit of the collaboration with INRA has contributed to the development of innovative Phileo solutions and has helped advance health through nutrition, the announcement said. In addition, Phileo participated in the France Génomique METACHICK project that established a catalog of the intestinal metagenome in poultry.

The announcement noted that the new agreement will develop the collaborations to enrich their mutual understanding of common challenges, foster innovation and strengthen their national and international networks, skills and ability to meet future challenges.

Backed by 30 years of experience and a global staff of 150 people, Phileo is a player in the animal nutrition, health and welfare market. Phileo works at the crossroads of nutrition and animal health to design, develop and deliver nutritional solutions to improve animal health and performance.

As a global key player in yeasts and fermentation, Lesaffre designs, manufactures and markets innovative solutions for baking, food taste and pleasure, health care and biotechnology. The family group started in northern France in 1853 and is now a multinational and a multicultural company, employing 10,000 people at 78 subsidiaries based in 50 countries. Lesaffre achieves a turnover of 2 billion euros.
