Harper joins CSA Animal Nutrition

Dr. Mike Harper will provide nutrition consulting services and technical support for dairy clients.

CSA Animal Nutrition is pleased to announce that Dr. Mike Harper has joined its team as a dairy nutritionist.

Harper will provide technical support to regional feed manufacturers, dairy consultants, and dairy producers. A primary function is to optimize nutrition programs, while at the same time keeping economic returns in mind.

“We are pleased to have Mike join our CSA team and expect his education and practical experience will bring value to our customers,” said Charles Shininger, president of CSA Animal Nutrition. “His experience working on dairy farms, along with his technical sales and service work in addition to his formal education will allow him to connect and communicate effectively in many different situations in the market. At CSA, we are continuing to invest in assembling a world class multi-specie nutrition team to provide leading edge nutrition services and deliver value to our clients.”

Prior to joining CSA Animal Nutrition, Dr. Mike Harper was employed by Milk Specialties Global. He started with them after earning his Ph.D. from the Pennsylvania State University. His Ph.D.  studies, under the direction of Dr. Alex Hristov, focused on utilization of alternative forages, such as brown midrib dwarf pearl millet, BMR sorghum, as well as oat, wheat and triticale silage in lactating cow diets. Harper also obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in animal science from the Pennsylvania State University. In between earning his degrees, he worked on a 200-cow and a 2,800-cow dairy to gain practical experience.

“Dr. Harper brings a broad perspective of dairy cattle nutrition and management to our team.,” said Dr. Jim Aldrich, director of Dairy Nutrition. “In addition to his own research on forages, he was involved in several other relevant projects, including  corn silage fiber digestibility, methane mitigation, rumen protected amino acids, and effects of various plant extracts.”

Harper is located in Pennsylvania and will support existing relationships and help establish new clients.

“Mike’s focus will be on supporting clients in eastern Ohio and the Mid-Atlantic region,” said Wibe Fokkink, commercial dairy director. “We are pleased that Mike joined our team and believe he will add value to all our relationships in the market.”
