CPF encourages contract farmers to adopt high labor practices

Charoen Pokphand Foods PCL (CPF) has implemented the Good Labor Practices (GLP) – Poultry Thailand principle throughout its broiler contract farms across Thailand to ensure slavery-free status in the company’s broiler supply chain.

The company requires all suppliers to comply with international human rights standard and emphasized that the standard will significantly improve the quality of life for those who work in its poultry supply chain. The GLP will guarantee that the workers are treated fairly under the globally recognized practices, CPF said.

The company has encouraged its contract farmers to comply with GLP since last year. The farms were audited by trained CPF employees this year.

Parisotat Punnabhum, CPF executive vice president of human resources, explained that the audit team was trained by the Labor Standard Development Bureau to audit contract farms nationwide. The team also advised farmers to apply the practices through the transition, ensuring an effective compliance of the GLP standard.

Punnabhum said Thailand currently places great importance on labor practices and human rights. As a result, the GLP standard is now included in the Thailand Agricultural Standard for Good Agriculture Practices for broiler farms, which is certified by the Department of Livestock Development.

“Eighty percent of the broiler contract farms were audited by CPF’s staff during the first nine months of this year. The assessment showed that most of the farms are able to comply with the GLP standard,” Parisotat said, adding that the company’s next step is to help those farmers apply for the Thailand Labor Standard (TLS) 8001-2010 from the Department of Labor Protection & Welfare.

The certified farms will set a new standard for the poultry business in terms of labor management as well as traceability. With TLS compliance, CPF said consumers can be convinced that the workers in its supply chain are treated with a high standard for human rights.

Parisotat added that 76 out of 100 company-owned broiler farms are TLS 8001-2010 certified, and the remaining farms are in the certification process, with expectations for completion within the first quarter of 2019.

CPF said it plans to extend the successful implementation of GLP in its poultry business to its overseas operations to ensure that it has delivered a single standard of product quality to consumers worldwide.
