A Cargill poultry processing plant in London, Ontario remains closed after a fire broke out Monday. A Cargill spokesperson told Feedstuffs that the cause of the fire is still being determined. Fortunately, the facility was closed for a Canadian holiday and not in operation when the fire occurred in the early morning. As such, no employees were impacted, the spokesperson said.
At 4:30am, the London Fire Department crew arrived to heavy smoke and flames. Platoon Chief Kirk Loveland told CTV News Windsor said they started to attack the fire but that it was getting out of control, so they “went into a defensive mode to with aerial operations to apply heavy water streams.”
Crews were eventually able to knock down the fire and get inside to attack the fire from the interior.
Loveland said the fire was in the compacting area of the building where there is mechanical equipment and the plant does crushing.
“Thanks to the excellent response from the London firefighters in combination with our sprinkler/ pump system, the fire was quickly contained,” the Cargill spokesperson said, adding that it is still too soon to say when the plant will be back up and running.
