With Arm & Hammer Animal and Food Production’s newest #ScienceHearted solution, dairies can now safely and effectively control pathogens in recycled manure solids (RMS).

Arm & Hammer’s team at The ScienceHearted Center in Waukesha, Wis., has been diligently working on CERTILLUS Eco Dairy Bedding, a patented solution using Bacillus strains from Arm & Hammer’s vast library to inhibit environmental mastitis-causing organisms. This product safely and effectively uses beneficial bacteria to target pathogenic threats in RMS bedding, helps lower somatic cell count (SCC) and reduces the incidence of mastitis. The product also helps farmers meet their sustainability goals by reducing the risks associated with RMS without the safety concerns of chemical bedding treatments.

“RMS represent a cost-effective, sustainable bedding source for dairy farms, but the current methods of controlling pathogens have significant drawbacks,” said Jesse Thompson, manager of ruminant product development at Arm & Hammer. “Our team at The ScienceHearted Center set out to create a product that would reduce pathogen loads in bedding, reduce bulk tank SCC and ultimately reduce incidences of mastitis. And that’s what we’ve accomplished with CERTILLUS Eco Dairy Bedding.”

The team at Arm & Hammer conducted research using CERTILLUS Eco Dairy Bedding on dairies across the U.S. before making this new product available.

“Our team has seen incredible results with CERTILLUS Eco Dairy Bedding,” said Dr. Ben Saylor, dairy technical services manager. “In commercial dairy trials, this new product decreased the average counts of E. coli, coliforms, Klebsiella and group D streptococci in the bedding, decreased bulk tank SCC on all five research sites and decreased average monthly mastitis events on four of the five trial sites.”

CERTILLUS Eco Dairy Bedding is now in use in six different states and its use is continuing to expand.

“Our team has been diligently testing different product formats and application methods as well as generating data in different types of RMS handling systems,” said Mike Motta, business development manager. “We’re proud to add this new #ScienceHearted solution to our growing lineup of products for dairy farmers.”
