Red meat and poultry supplies down 2% from year-ago levels.

Total red meat, poultry stocks in cold storage lower

The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently released the April “Cold Storage” report, which showed that the total inventory of beef, pork, chicken and turkey at the end of March was 2.373 billion lb., a 1.5% decrease from a year ago.

Total red meat supplies in freezers were at 1.1 billion lb., down 3% from the previous month and down 2% from last year. Beef supplies in freezers totaled 450.7 million lb., down 5% from the previous month and down 3% from last year. Frozen pork supplies were at 610.1 million lb., down 1% from the previous month and down slightly from last year. Stocks of pork bellies were up 9% from last month but down 1% from last year.

Frozen poultry supplies on March 31, 2019, totaled 1.32 billion lb., down 1% from the previous month and down 2% from a year ago. Total stocks of chicken were at 845.5 million lb., down 3% from the previous month and down 3% from last year. Total turkey in freezers was at 466.9 million lb., up 3% from last month and up 1% from March 31, 2018.

Total natural cheese stocks in refrigerated warehouses on March 31, 2019, were up 1% from the previous month and up 4% from March 31, 2018. Butter stocks were up 11% from last month but down 1% from a year ago.
