Despite some declines from 2017, protein supplies remain ample.

Total chicken, turkey, beef, pork supply larger than year ago

Total chicken, turkey, beef and pork supply in freezers as of Nov. 30, 2018, was 2.231 billion lb., up 2.7% from the same period last year, according to the latest cold storage data released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Total frozen poultry supplies, including duck, on Nov. 30, 2018, were down 13% from the previous month but up 2% from a year ago. USDA reported total stocks of chicken at 935.19 million lb., down 1% from the previous month but up 4% from last year. Total turkey in freezers, at 274.12 million lb., was down 38% from last month and down 5% from Nov. 30, 2017.

According to the report, total red meat supplies, including veal, in freezers were down 6% from the previous month but up 4% from last year. Total beef in freezers was down slightly from the previous month but up 6% from last year at 514.72 million lb. Frozen pork supplies, at 507.56 million lb., were down 11% from the previous month but up 1% from last year. Stocks of pork bellies were up 38% from last month and up 5% from last year.

Total natural cheese stocks in refrigerated warehouses on Nov. 30, 2018, were down 1% from the previous month but up 7% from Nov. 30, 2017. Butter stocks were down 33% from last month and down 3% from a year ago.
