Total pork, beef, turkey and chicken in cold storage at the end of January was 2.374 billion lb., 2.4% higher than a year ago, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s latest “Cold Storage” report showed.

Total red meat supplies in freezers rose 5% from the previous month and 3% from last year. Total beef in freezers was 489.14 million lb., up 2% from the previous month but down 4% from last year. Frozen pork supplies were 625.19 million lb., 8% higher than the previous month and 11% higher than last year. Stocks of pork bellies were up 6% from last month and up 32% from last year.

Total frozen poultry supplies on Jan. 31, 2020, were 4% above the previous month and 1% higher than a year ago. Total stocks of chicken, at 957.49 million lb., were down 2% from the previous month but up 12% from last year. Total turkey in freezers was 301.78 million lb., up 30% from last month but down 23% from Jan. 31, 2019.

Total natural cheese stocks in refrigerated warehouses on Jan. 31, 2020, were up 2% from the previous month but 1% lower than Jan. 31, 2019. Butter stocks were up 28% from last month and up 15% from a year ago.
