Quarterly hog inventory shows 'plenty of hogs'

Industry bets on Chinese demand as pork production continues to rise.

There were no real surprises in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s latest “Quarterly Hogs & Pigs” report. The U.S. inventory of all hogs and pigs on Sept. 1, 2019, was 77.7 million head, a 3% increase from the same quarter last year and a 3% increased from the June report. The number was the highest Sept. 1 inventory of all hogs and pigs since the estimates began in 1988. It was also in line with pre-report estimates.
