Number of milk cows declines 8,000 head from prior month and year.

Milk production in the 23 major states during July totaled 17.3 billion lb., up 0.4% from July 2017, according the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s latest “Milk Production” report. USDA also revised June production to 17.2 billion lb., a 1.6% increase from June 2017. The June revision represented an increase of 40 million lb. or 0.2% from last month's preliminary production estimate.
Production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 1,980 lb. for July, 8 lb. above July 2017. This is the highest production per cow for the month of July since the 23-state series began in 2003, USDA noted.
The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major states was 8.74 million head, 1,000 head more than July 2017 but 8,000 head less than June 2018, USDA reported.
Total milk production in the U.S. during July totaled 18.4 billion lb., a 0.4% rise from July 2017.
USDA reported that production per cow averaged 1,953 lb. for July, 10 lb. above July 2017.
The number of milk cows on farms in the U.S. was 9.40 million head, 8,000 head less than July 2017 and also 8,000 head less than June 2018.
