A complex storm system evolving across the eastern half of the U.S. will result in active weather during the first half of the week.

Early- to midweek rainfall could total 2-4 inches along the Gulf Coast from southeastern Louisiana to western Florida, extending northeastward through the mid-Atlantic states into New England. However, significant rainfall will bypass Florida’s peninsula.

A sharp cold wave outbreak will trail the rain, with mid- to late-week snow squalls expected downwind of the Great Lakes. Like last week, temperatures could fall to 32°F or below as far south as the northern tier of Florida. On Thursday morning, temperatures ranging from -10 to -20°F should occur in the Red River Valley of the North, while sub-0°F readings may extend as far south as Iowa.

Elsewhere, a generally dry weather pattern across the western and central U.S. may begin to break down during the second half of the week, with a couple of rounds of light precipitation possible in the West and some rain and snow possible by Friday in the Midwest.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for warmer-than-normal weather nationwide, except for near-normal temperatures across southern Florida. The south-central U.S. will have the greatest likelihood of experiencing above-normal temperatures.

Meanwhile, near- or above-normal precipitation across most of the country should contrast with drier-than-normal conditions in an area stretching from southern California and the Southwest to the central High Plains.
