Despite the ongoing commitment of the industry to learn more about the liver abscess disease complex and how to best manage it, the incidence of this costly multifactorial condition is not decreasing.¹

A heavy cost to the bottom line

This multi-factorial disease significantly affects the beef industry through the loss of condemned livers and other viscera because of reduced animal performance and carcass yield, and decreased packer processing efficiency. Using conservative estimates, viscera losses are approximated at $60 million per year.¹

The effect of varying the feeding schedule

A study was conducted to determine the effect of feeding duration and timing on the efficacy of Tylan^® (tylosin) at reducing liver abscesses.¹ Crossbred steers (3,360 head) in the Texas Panhandle were divided into six treatment groups fed the same ration for 164 days (February to August 2017). The average initial weight was 830 lbs, and final weights ranged from 1,451 to 1,461 lbs.

Timing of treatment

Elanco's research indicates that the longer Tylan is fed to cattle and the earlier Tylan is provided in the feeding period, the better liver abscesses are controlled. In a recent study has shown that the voluntary removal prior to slaughter may not impact the effectiveness of Tylan reducing liver abscess incidence at slaughter (Figure 1).

Being strategic

With limited alternative options to this impactful disease, Tylan remains a cost-effective tool with a proven return on investment. Elanco's research indicates that the earlier Tylan is provided in the feeding period and the longer it is fed to cattle, the better liver abscesses are controlled. Continued research is needed to better understand and address this costly disease complex.
