Dr. Paul Sundberg, DVM, PhD, DACVPM, executive director of the Swine Health Information Center (SHIC), joined Feedstuffs 365 to provide an in-depth look at a new year-long study that sought to identify U.S. pork industry gaps in biosecurity defenses against foreign animal disease, particularly African swine fever (ASF).

“We get ASF in the U.S. over a ten-year period or longer, we’re likely to have $50 billion worth of loss to the industry,” Dr. Sundberg told viewers.

However, those losses would extend beyond the monetary impact seen at the farms, he added, as international markets would ban U.S. product, the cost of pigs would rise and the industry would lose producers.

“If we’re going to prevent that, we want to make sure that we don’t have any open windows that the virus can get in," he said.

The study looked at pathways of entry as well as whether the U.S. has procedures in place that could mitigate the risk if the disease does arrive on U.S. soil.
