With areas from the central Plains to the mid-Atlantic still recovering from the Jan. 5-6 snow and ice storm, a new weather system is starting to take shape across the southwestern U.S. and northwestern Mexico. Initially, any precipitation associated with the developing storm will be light.

On Thursday, however, further intensification of the storm system and an influx of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico will lead to widespread precipitation across the southeastern Plains and the western Gulf Coast region.

Wintry precipitation (snow, sleet and freezing rain) will be a significant threat from northeastern Texas into the mid-South, while late-week rainfall could total 1-3 inches or more in the western and central Gulf Coast states.

Early in the weekend, precipitation of various types will spread into the Atlantic Coast states.

Elsewhere, chilly weather will continue to dominate the central and eastern U.S., while the threat of high winds in parts of southern California should persist at least through Wednesday – and possibly longer.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for the likelihood of near-normal or below-normal temperatures nationwide, except for warmer-than-normal weather in parts of the North Central U.S.

Meanwhile, near- or below-normal precipitation across much of the country should contrast with wetter-than-normal conditions on the northern Plains and from the southern Rockies into western and southern Texas.
