The U.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Poultry & Eggs (US-RSPE) released its first-ever Sustainability Framework Report during a Jan. 29 Tech Talk at the 2025 International Production & Processing Expo (IPPE) in Atlanta, Ga. This benchmark report marks a significant milestone in advancing sustainability within the U.S. poultry and egg supply chain, covering broilers, turkeys and eggs, the organization announced in a news release.

Developed through the US-RSPE Sustainability Framework – a multi-stakeholder tool designed to assess, track and improve sustainability practices – the report provides anonymous, aggregated data on critical metrics such as environmental stewardship, community impact, animal welfare and workforce well-being. For the first time, stakeholders can access comprehensive, standardized insights into the industry’s sustainability performance.

The framework, consisting of 101 metrics across 15 indicators, is designed to give poultry and egg value chain participants an opportunity to measure their sustainability efforts, from animal health to water quality, and identify areas for improvement, according to the framework report.

"This report marks a significant step forward for sustainability in the poultry industry," said Ryan Bennett, executive director of US-RSPE. "It reflects the collaborative efforts of farmers, processors, integrators, environmental groups and other key stakeholders to create meaningful change and to highlight the industry's continuous improvement in producing sustainable protein."

US-RSPE is an independent, multi-stakeholder organization that advances, supports and communicates continuous improvement in sustainability for the poultry and egg value chain. US-RSPE has partnered with the Texas A&M University’s Center for Applied Technology to house the data collected confidentially through the reporting platform, which is designed to ensure anonymity.

The IPPE Tech Talk session highlighted essential findings from the report, offering a detailed exploration of sustainability benchmarks, innovative practices and strategies for continuous improvement, the news release said. Attendees engaged in discussions emphasizing the framework's scalability and adaptability for organizations at various stages of their sustainability journey.

According to Bennett, the US-RSPE Sustainability Framework exemplifies the power of cross-sector collaboration, addressing vital areas such as greenhouse gas emissions, water usage, animal well-being and workforce diversity. This collective approach provides actionable data and a clear roadmap to drive sustainable progress across the industry.
