The Make American Healthy Again (MAHA) movement is championing a return to traditional food practices that has been driving a renewed interest in tallow, a nutrient-rich and sustainable fat rendered from beef or sheep. This shift not only supports health-conscious consumers seeking alternatives to industrial seed oils but also offers significant benefits for the rendering industry, according to an announcement from the North American Renderers Association (NARA).

Renderers, who transform animal byproducts into valuable products like tallow, play a crucial role in reducing waste and promoting sustainability within the agriculture sector.

Recent discussions, including those led by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, have highlighted tallow as a sustainable and healthful alternative to heavily processed seed oils. Tallow is minimally processed, retaining its natural properties and rich content of essential fatty acids and vitamins A, D, E, and K – nutrients often lacking in modern diets, NARA said.

As consumer awareness grows, the rendering industry stands to benefit from the increasing demand for sustainable fats. Tallow production aligns with environmentally conscious practices by utilizing byproducts of livestock raised primarily for meat, thereby reducing reliance on energy-intensive monoculture crops.

The MAHA movement's advocacy for tallow underscores its role in a circular food system, highlighting the rendering industry’s contribution to creating efficient and eco-friendly solutions, the announcement said.

In addition to its sustainability, tallow is celebrated for its versatility in the kitchen, NARA said. With a high smoke point and rich flavor, it can be used for frying, roasting and enhancing a variety of dishes. Restaurants and food producers are beginning to reintroduce this traditional fat, giving it a modern revival in culinary circles, the group added.

The MAHA movement’s efforts to elevate tallow as a sustainable, healthful and practical alternative emphasize the vital partnership between renderers and advocates for sustainable food practices, ensuring a brighter future for both the industry and the environment, the announcement said.

NARA represents the interests of the North American rendering industry to regulatory and other governmental agencies, promotes the greater use of animal byproducts and fosters the opening and expansion of trade between foreign buyers and North American exporters.

The Make America Healthy Again PAC was established to channel the momentum of the health freedom movement into decisive action to address some of the most pressing issues facing the nation today, according to the MAHA official site. Its key issues and policy priorities are to: combat the chronic disease epidemic, champion regenerative agriculture, protect natural habitat, combat corporate corruption and remove harmful toxins from America’s food, water and air.
