The World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) reported that highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N9, Eurasian lineage goose/Guangdong clade 2.3.4.4b and HPAI H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b were both confirmed in a commercial duck meat operation in Merced County, Calif. This is the first confirmed case of HPAI H5N9 in poultry in the U.S.

The ongoing outbreak was first reported in November 2024, and the H5N9 strain was recently identified in addition to H5N1 with the same clade.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), in conjunction with state animal health and wildlife officials, is conducting comprehensive epidemiological investigations and enhanced surveillance in response to the HPAI-related events.

Since the start of the U.S. outbreak in February 2022, more than 145 million birds have been affected by HPAI.
