Official journal of American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists welcomes Bill Weiss as new editor-in-chief on Jan. 1.
December 4, 2024
Applied Animal Science (AAS), the official peer-reviewed journal of the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists (ARPAS), announced a forthcoming leadership transition, recognizing the significant contributions of outgoing editor-in-chief Dr. David K. Beede and welcoming Dr. William “Bill” P. Weiss to the helm starting Jan. 1, 2025.
Beede, who has served as editor-in-chief for seven years, has been instrumental in elevating AAS to new heights while continuing its legacy as a platform championing emerging innovations in animal agriculture, the announcement stated. He smoothly navigated the journal through the pandemic period while spearheading new initiatives such as the new category of Perspectives & Commentary, all of which has led to a revitalized library of journal articles, including the recent special issue devoted to liver abscesses in cattle. Under his guidance, AAS successfully transitioned to open access, making its entire catalog freely available to the public while making author costs more affordable.
Dr. Al Kertz, executive vice president of ARPAS, said, "We extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. Beede for his dedication and vision. His contributions have significantly advanced the journal and impacted the field of animal science, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of animal science professionals."
Weiss has been a longtime ARPAS member and has guided many of his students to become members while they were graduate students. Following a transition period this fall, he will take over as editor-in-chief in January 2025.
Weiss is a professor emeritus of dairy cattle nutrition at The Ohio State University. During his 40-year career at Ohio State, he has conducted research on the effects of minerals and vitamins on cow health, feed evaluation and methods to incorporate variability into ration formulation for dairy cattle. He has published more than 150 journal articles and hundreds of proceedings and extension articles.
Weiss has received several American Dairy Science Association (ADSA) awards and was named a Fellow of ADSA in 2015. He served on the 2001 Dairy NRC Committee and as co-chair on the 2021 National Academies of Sciences, Engineering & Medicine Dairy Committee.
"We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Weiss as the new editor in chief of AAS," said ARPAS president Dr. Peter Erickson. "His extensive experience and deep commitment to scientific excellence will undoubtedly propel the journal to even greater heights and continue to provide valuable service to our readers, authors, members and the animal science community."
AAS is a gold open-access, peer-reviewed scientific journal that has been in continuous publication since 1985. AAS is a leading outlet for animal science research and welcomes novel manuscripts on applied technology, reviews on the use or application of research-based information on animal agriculture, commentaries on contemporary issues, short communications and technical notes.
ARPAS provides certification of animal scientists through examination, continuing education and commitment to a code of ethics. Continual improvement of its individual members is catalyzed through publications – including the AAS journal – and by providing information on educational opportunities. ARPAS is affiliated with five professional societies: ADSA, American Meat Science Association, American Society of Animal Science, Equine Science Society and Poultry Science Association.
