This week in Washington: March 7-12

Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack will again be on Capitol Hill to discuss the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s budget this week, this time before the Senate appropriators. The House is in recess, although the Senate is in session.

Here are highlights from the upcoming week for hearings and activities important to agriculture.

Senate Ag Appropriations subcommittee hearing - Wednesday, the Senate Appropriations Committee's Subcommittee on Agriculture Appropriations will hold a hearing at 2:00 p.m. ET on the Fiscal Year 2017 Budget for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Vilsack is slated to appear as well as USDA chief economist Robert Johansson and USDA budget officer Michael Young. To watch it live or an archived webcast, click here.

EPA regulatory actions: Wednesday, March 9, the Environment and Public Works committee will hold a hearing  to examine cooperative federalism, focusing on state perspectives on Environmental Protection

National Farmers Union Convention: Monday, Mar. 7, at 9 a.m. CST Vilsack will deliver keynote remarks on innovation and the future of American agriculture at the National Farmers Union (NFU) 114th Anniversary Convention in Minneapolis.

Conversation on food and nutrition at the Bipartisan Policy Center: On Wednesday, March 9, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will join former Secretaries Dan Glickman and Ann Veneman to discuss the current state of nutrition in America and innovative ways to create a healthier future.

Jacqui Fatka grew up on a diversified livestock and grain farm in southwest Iowa and graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communications, with a minor in agriculture education, in 2003. She’s been writing for agricultural audiences ever since. In college, she interned with Wallaces Farmer and cultivated her love of ag policy during an internship with the Iowa Pork Producers Association, working in Sen. Chuck Grassley’s Capitol Hill press office. In 2003, she started full time for Farm Progress companies’ state and regional publications as the e-content editor, and became Farm Futures’ policy editor in 2004. A few years later, she began covering grain and biofuels markets for the weekly newspaper Feedstuffs. Fatka also serves as the interim executive secretary-treasurer for the North American Agricultural Journalists. She lives on a small acreage in central Ohio with her husband and three children.
