Smithfield plant operations resume after fire

Majority of employees off for holiday when fire occurred.

Smithfield Foods Inc., a subsidiary of WH Group Ltd., said Sept. 8 its Monmouth, Ill., Farmland Foods plant will operate on a full production schedule beginning Friday and Saturday after a fire in the rendering portion of the plant earlier this week. The facility processes more than 10,000 hogs per day and is the largest employer in the county.
