Russia considering ban on Australian beef

Russia imposed a temporary ban on beef from JBS Australian division after finding a trace of steroid.

After finding traces of steroid trembolone, Russia has levied a temporary ban on beef imports from Australian unit of JBS S.A., according to Rosselkhoznadzor, the country’s phytosanitary surveillance service.

Sergei Dankvert, head of Rosselkhoznadzor, told the news agency Interfax that Russia will most likely impose an embargo on all chilled beef from Australia.

As result, Rosselkhoznadzor requested Australia’s veterinary service to investigate Australian beef exports. In the next few days, Russia will make a final ruling on a beef ban for the whole country, said Dankvert.

Australia is the third largest exporter of beef.  According to JBS S.A. 2013 financial report, Russia accounted for 5.7% of the company’s total exports.
