N&H TOP LINE: Biorefineries seek to create new feed sources

New method efficiently separates proteins from biomass byproducts, while project seeks to develop new feed sources for swine and poultry from silage.

According to research by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, extraction with deep eutectic solvents (DESs) offers an efficient, sustainable and easy method for dissolving proteins from agro-biomass byproducts. DESs are mixtures of solids that form a liquid solution at low temperatures when mixed in suitable ratios.

The method has been tested on separating protein from brewers spent grain (BSG), rapeseed press cake and wheat bran, all of which contain high amounts of protein.
