New port protocols in effect

SOLAS protocols allow for weight of loaded container be verified by shippers.

The Federal Maritime Commission recently approved the Port Operations & Safety Discussion Agreement, which began July 1. The agreement allows six operating port authorities located on the U.S. Atlantic and Gulf coasts – ports in Georgia, Massachusetts, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia – to take the weight of a container determined at a terminal gate and report it to an ocean carrier.

The discussion agreement gives shippers a flexible approach to meet new U.N.
