Local food initiatives get federal boost

USDA awards 82 new Farm to School projects and chooses 26 Local Foods, Local Places to develop local food projects.

THE push for local foods received a big bump in recent days thanks to announcements from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the White House.

First, local farmers, food businesses and schools from 82 farm-to-school projects across the country received a boost with Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack's announcement of more than $5 million in funding from the Farm to School Grant Program.
