LIVESTOCK MARKET REPORT: Cold Storage report shows record-high red meat levels

Combined total of meat increased despite decrease in chicken stocks.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service released the latest “Cold Storage” report yesterday, revealing that the combined total of beef, pork, chicken and turkey stocks were 7% higher than last month, at 2.270 billion lb., and 8.1% higher than a year ago.

According to the latest numbers, total red meat supplies in freezers as of Jan. 31, 2016, increased 9% from December and rose 7% from the same period last year.
