January milk production shows modest increase

Highest production per cow since USDA began reporting the series.

Milk production increased only slightly during the month of January, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s “Milk Production” report. The report, released Friday, showed that production in the 23 major milk-producing states during January totaled 16.6 billion lb., a 0.3% increase from January 2015.

USDA revised December production to 16.4 billion lb., up 0.7% from December 2014. The revision represented an increase of 19 million lb., or 0.1%, from last month's preliminar
