ACCORDING to the U.S. Department of Transportation, the volume of freight demand by all modes of transportation — truck, rail, maritime and air — is expected to increase from 18.5 billion tons in 2010 to more than 27.5 billion tons in 2040 — a 48% increase.

Demand for trucking is expected to increase from 12.5 billion tons in 2010 to 18.5 billion tons in 2040 — a 67% increase in the total growth in freight demand.
