HPAI: Many variables in play

Consumer and export demand variables could change how avian flu affects market.

LOSSES associated with the outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) have reached historic magnitudes, surpassing the 1983-84 HPAI outbreak that resulted in 17 million culled birds, according to a special report by the Iowa State University Egg Industry Center.

The report, compiled by business analyst Maro Ibarburu, sought to answer the big question of how much the disease will affect egg prices.
