Egg producers renew call for scrutiny of organic rule

State veterinarians weigh in to say animal welfare and food safety would be jeopardized by proposed USDA rule.

The nation’s commercial organic egg producers renewed their call for closer scrutiny of the food safety and animal welfare impacts of a rule proposed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture that would require organic hens to be directly exposed to the outdoors.

The rule would eliminate outdoor porches as an option for organic producers, taking away the physical barrier protecting organic hens from predators and diseases.
