Feedlot placements lower than prior year, while marketings have increased.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture “Cattle on Feed” report released Friday showed that cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in the U.S. for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 head or more totaled 10.6 million head on Jan. 1, 2016. The inventory was slightly below Jan. 1, 2015.

Analysts polled by Urner Barry had expected that the supply of cattle on feed would be down 1.2% compared to the previous year.
